They only train on 28` trailers. My class had 12 students and 1 instructor in the beginning, then they added one more instructor, making it 6 students per truck. I did get my CDL, but I believe this school is a cut and dry "CDL Mill".

Comments: I attended Alliance in 1995. First, I want to say that anybody who is not sure about driving for a living should not give a school like Alliance $4900. Put that money toward a degree or something. This school IS thorough. They spend adequate time on everything, but that was not the problem. One instructor yelled at everybody, and one was grabbing girls' behinds in the backroom. The recruiter that signed me up was some kind of schiester. Like he was my best friend or something. High pressure sales techniques. Nobody does much to put you at ease in the truck, but still, there were times I was on cloud nine thinking "I can do this!" I had good days and bad days at Alliance, but in the end, I wasn't cut out for trucking. I found a great job right after I graduated and I'm still here.

The instructors were forced to cram all the information into us very quickly over a two week period., For example I had taken my C.D.L. permit test at the D.M.V. on the third day of school, and I took the skills and road test on day fourteen....no time to waste. Over all it was a good experience, and I would suggest that if you are in a hurry to get your C.D.L., this school would be a good place to get started.

The class instruction was very good. the cost was cheaper then most. $1600.00 if you stay for 1 year. I was never presured to lease a truck and my home time was mostly every three weeks. I had one of the best driver managers their. Steve Haggard Truley someone that cared about their fleet miles and drivers. If you want miles and are willing to work with the managers then i would say this school has it all. If you think you should be able to do everything your way all the time then go independant. I have no accidents on my record, I remember a lot of things that I learned.

Comments: As everyone else has stated this is the basic CDL mill for driver training. There were good points and bad pointsto the school. First the bad,It seems to me they try to run you thru the classroom part like running cattle thru an auction. I did not think that there was enough time or emphasis put on mapping and logging,(didn't have any problems doing theses things but could tell several of my classmates was not grasping the material) Come to find out the lady that was teaching us the first week classroom section had less than 50,000 miles experience, and the other bad part was the office personel I believe her name was Amy was completele rude to most of us. For instance one of the students was counting on some money we were supposed to get at the end of the first week, well he did not get it because of some sort of mistake she had made. When he asked her about it she had no answer for him, He then said to her what am I supposed to do I don't have enough money to eat on until you get this figured out. Her response was It's not my Problem, I guess you won't be able to eat!!! enough negative. The only good part of that school for me was my trainers Bernie and Terry. They really spent the time with me to help me with what problems I was having and I am forever in debt to them for that. If this school had more instructors like Bernie and Terry it would be a top notch school. As for company placement I chose P.A.M. Transport (BIG MISTAKE). The first Trainer they sent me with spoke very little english and was more than 12 hours late picking me up (what a fine example he was) Anyway When I got in the truck with him he took my log book and hid it from me (obviously he was not running legal). We stopped somewhere in Arkansas and the guy damn near left me (Still Trying to figure that one out)So we got to Dallas Texas and I got off the truck and flew back home. That next I went back to C-1 to see what kind of options I had as far as other companies went The Driving Instructor Manager almost insisted that I go back to P.A.M.. So like a fool I Did. The second Driver trainer I got was pretty cool, he told me what was true about the company and what was false come to find out most everything the recruiter at C-1 had told we was a pack of lies, So to confirm what my trainer had told me I called P.A.M.'s Student service department and she told the same thing my trainer told me and with all of that being told I quit. Of course now I'm paying that exuberent cost of C-1's tution and am driving for a local company (The C-1 office personel told me I wouldn't be able to drive anything more than a garbage or dump truck guess I proved them wrong). Well the moral of this story is C-1 is not all bad, but it is far from being all good. If you are considering going to this school think twice before you do you could possibly be making a mistake Rookies Beware!!!

Many occasions was called by Driver Solutions in my second week of training to come up with my medical records. Did everything as asked but since my records didnt' come in on time as expected was told that my carrier is going to drop me if they didn't get my records today immidiently. Everything is out of my hands and now. Also was called on employent records that was several years ago sinc they want 10 yrs of work experience. WARNING!! They will check your references and they will check your work history so be prepared to show proof of check stubs for verification unless they can contact your job from previously. I just wish they would have done all of this before stepping into the classroom enviroment that was you can focus on what you need to do. This added stress doesn't help you on the streets or the range!!!

If you need help, they are more than willing to help you on anything that you need help on. I dont know who made this other comment but they were all wrong on thier description of the school. They have real nice 1998 Volvo trucks and are easy to learn in. I will Graduate 4/13/05 and am very pleased in the experience that i have had there. I would recommend this school to anyone compared to the schools in St. louis. Most of those have a 20 or 30 student to 1 teacher ratio. I was worried that i wouldn't be able to do this course, but with Dennis and Dale there to help, they have made it a breeze.

Comments: Cost was just over 8000 dollars. By the time I get the loan paid off it will be almost 20000 dollars if I don't pay it off early. One thing they forget to tell the students is that if they have been convicted of a felony that they will have a hard time of getting a driving job. They cover the logbook fairly well, but in my opinion they could have been a little better. The coverage that they did on winter driving was a joke. They don't cover how to put on chains or what tires they go on. I know some of the tires they go on, but that is because I have friends that are truckers. I asked questions about things like that. They covered the hooking and unhooking real well. We had to do that over and over. Plus they made us hook and unhook the trucks everyday. We had to pretrip the trucks every morning and at the end of the day. They could have done better on that. After the first couple of times of going over it with us they had us do it on our own. In my opinion they should have at least been out there when we were pretripping just in case we missed something they could have told us about it. Their equipment wasn't in the best of shape. One of the trucks we drove had a broken brake shoe on the driver front. When we told them about it they said that we had to drive it anyway. One of the trailers had the frame cracked and it had been that way for awhile because the crack was rusted and went almost all the way through the frame. Another trailer that they had there the brakes wouldn't release for a few minutes after the brakes were applied. It's a miracle that no one has been hurt or even killed because of the equipment.

Comments: I graduated in 1994 and still maintain an accident free ticket free MVR. At that time the course was 6 weeks long. Now the same training is done in 4 and a half weeks. Central Tech has an excellent large driving range with hard surfaced roads. The course has every kind of corner, twist and turn you will find in the real world also a mock railroad crossing. As a newbie I was well informed and trained by experienced, kind and considerate instructors. They DID NOT yell at the students. Tech has plenty of late model mechanically sound tractors and trailers. All trailers were loaded all the time. Trailers ranged from 48 foot vans, tankers, flatbeds and even a set of doubles. They probably have 53 foot vans by now, not sure. All students drove all loaded miles on two lane state highways and interstates. All students drove in cities during rush hours negociating traffic lights, stop signs right and left hand turns. There was also night driving. We entered, parked and exited different truck stops. There were 2 students to each tractor trailer. The housing I had was very good and at a reasonable price. FYI No school turns out finished drivers. Graduates are only well informed trainees. They are far from a real truck driver. No school in the world can produce a real driver that takes lots of hands on miles over mountains, ice, snow, ice, sleet, torrential rains, etc. By the time a newbie logs about 250,000 hands on miles they may be on the brink of becoming a real driver. There are many excellent experienced drivers out there willing to share their hard learned knowledge. A smart newbie will respectfully ask for their input. Asking saved this driver from making many mistakes. Most old hands have a wealth of knowledge to offer if you ask. Remember be respectful! Don't think Central Tech is a piece of cake. If you go there you will have to earn everything you get.

Comments: First week and a half in class learning basics and prepping for the written CDL test followed by additional class time watching videos and getting into greater detail about truck systems, road safety, cargo documentation, etc. Students must have their learner's permit by second week then initial training in the yard learning to shift and handle a tractor followed by pulling an empty trailer, usually a 45 footer. Next week and a half running the interstate and country roads to get the feel of the rig followed by 2-3 weeks of city driving with special emphasis on negative turns, a tricky task. Course is 6 days a week, 6 hours a day with Saturdays dedicated to backing and parallel parking practice. Class work involves achieving at least a 90% average on the PTDI course book. Students are given a log book to complete, day by day, detailing imaginary trips which the students are allowed to choose. Students are also required to complete 4 trip planning exercises taking into account loading/unloading, fuel and inspection stops, ports of entry and of course learning to read a map and figure mileage and time. Also taught are how to perform brake safety tests and pre-trip inspections with the pre-trip inspections emphasizing how to do it quickly and accurately when taking the road test. All in all, I would say that this school offers a fairly comprehensive course as it prepares its students for the real world. Admittedly, I do not have experience with any other school, but based on the info at this website concerning CD mills I would say that this school does its job. The instructor responsible for the classroom work is, in my opinion, especially effective in teaching the students, using real life experiences and a touch of humor to help the students understand. On the downside is the fact that several of the driving instructors are not as skilled as they should be when it comes to assisting the students in backing/parallel parking maneuvers and they are all part-time instructors who work other jobs. Also there has been no driving experience pulling a loaded trailer.

Well-maintained equipment: several White/GMC (Volvo) conventionals pulling empty 48' trailers (used for most driving), two White/GMC (Volvo) cabovers pulling heavily loaded 48' trailers (used once for load-pulling experience), straight trucks and bus for class B CDL. Tractors have 9-speed transmission. Driving range has mediocre "creature comforts" (no electricity or running water) but is otherwise OK. Road driving under all conditions: city, suburban, rural, highway. One night-driving session. Behind-the-wheel duration is by mileage rather than hours. Comments: I generally agree that this school is a CDL Mill. However, the school managers and instructors are very qualified and competent in their instruction. (One instructor had even been a DOT Inspector for several years.) They were patient, informative and were able to give individual instruction when needed. This school is geared toward entry into England's lease program, which is coupled with generally very good OTR trainers. The tuition price is refundable after two years of employment with England. After OTR training I was able to handle solo operation with little trouble. I am critical of the company's BS about the amount of home time that you get, especially if you live in the LA area. You will usually get the miles/pay, but don't count on getting home if you live on the west coast. (That's why I quit.)

Comments: The schooling was great nice instructers, but the problem I see is that for the money your paying or the loan your taking out, I don't feel your getting your moneys worth. Meaning after you compleat your school and you go out with your trainer(for 6 weeks) you go through the prosses of an up grade which is a 165 or something like that questions where you have to score a 80 or more to pass then you go for a upgrade which constits of going through 2 cars with out hitting them the moving over just alittle for 2 other cars then turning a little more to the right not to hit a parked trailer then monuvering to back in between 2 trailers and then pulling forwart to go around a van and go right back to the place you started from thats the up grade to you being out on your own, then when you have all your paper signed off then you get your fuel cards and assigned a truck and your out on your own. Now I feel that as new drivers we don't get the experiance we really need to me 6 weeks is not enough time to learn everything, your miles you get with a trainer is 25,000 and your training is up that it. I was a driver for this company a new driver and I didn't get the training I needed, I had no snow training, no chaining training, hardly any backing into docks training my trainer did it all because I was to slow in doing it,I did how ever get to back into a down word dock in the south carolins dock at the school but only did that a few times, I never got to drive in rush hour traffic I never really got inner city training. I was fired on the spot after I had driven 24 hours to get a load to it's drop point by 6:oo the next morning aftet I had droped a load in milwalkee wisconson the driving from there to niles illinoi to pick up a load had an accident doing a right hand turn in rush hour trying to find the place I was to load at, moved a pole and a traffic light, after the accident I proceeded to the pick up and had to deliver this load to channahan ill for another driver so he and his wife could go home for home time I got the load there and had to picked up their load and that had to be there at 6:00 the next morning in Boone Iowa. I left channahan ill and was sitting in Boone at 5:00 the next morning tired as heck. I called into the reciver and let them know I was there, I waited till I was called and got in the dock and unloaded, I called the safty people and I told them what had happend with the accident,,, I called my driver manager and I told her I was worried that I was going to loose my job she told me she wouldn't worrie about it because she had a driver that had 3 accidents in 1 month. I was called not even having an hour of sleep and I was told I was fired and to clean out my truck. No here is the point I want to make, I had 2 turning accidents they were right turn accidents now instead of firing the people they train they should have pulled me in to salt lake and said ok here is the problem were seeing and worked with me instead of firing me like they did. I took out a 3,000.00 loan to get the training. I think they should have pulled me in and gave me the help I wanted, I told them I wanted more help when I called over night and to have him relay that to my driver manager and oviously he did not do it. I told my manager I needed to get into the log class for this new hours of sevice because I needed the help. My manager was trying to get me back but there was not a driver to take the load so they kept sending me out. So the morel of this is I think instead of firing new driver and if they have a few accidents they should say ok were going to send you out with another trainer or put you out with another driver student and be able to lean from each other and get the money they said you would get like swift dose. Swift has a training program of 8 weeks over the road training and after that your paired up with another student driver two heads are better then one i always say. I also think as new drivers if your going to take out a loan or pay that much money for training and to learn I think we should get it and not be treated like statistics were there to learn a trade and by gosh we should get it thats what there getting payed for. I want my job back and I want what my money was paying them for, If you get fired and your a new driver you still have to pay that loan to them, They say they train the best of the best well I took the loan and I deserve to be traied just like they say in their ads, If they fire a new driver then that is not our fault it's their fault for not doing what they say thier going to do, if that driver is having problems they should work on the problems instead of saying your fired clean out your truck thats it. They tell you to go back to salt lake they have you fired and guess what they don't pay for your way home you have to pay it yourself, not only that they don't tell you that on the contract you sighn for the loan if your fired they take all that driving pay your ran for them and take it and put that to your loan and you don't see a dime of it. Basically you worked for nothing so that 24 hours I spent getting that load to Boone Iowa, I did it for free. So this is my possition with this company, and school I wish I could get the goverment to see how this school and company and others work because I think if these schools are going to make drivers out of us then that is what they should do no if ands or buts instead of useing us for money. It's not easy to find a nother job with out the experiance and I know alot of you know that, I myself am a dedicated person and I love being on the road but if this is the way this trucking school is going to be then I say the goverment needs to make changes and say hey if your going to make them drivers then work with them if they have accidents and you know where the problem is work on it till they get it right thats what there being payed for and as drivers and people that are paying them or taking out that loan and have to pay for that loan I say we need to have that right. Comments: I graduated from this school in June of 2003. I would definitely recommend it. I had a very positive experience there. The instructors are experienced and very easy-going. The school is not PTDI-certified but they use the same training manual as PTDI schools. I think they used to be certified but it's very expensive to get PTDI certification and I think the school is too small to justify the expense. I was glad it was small, I feel like I got more personalized instruction. The rooms were small and they only have a dirt lot instead of a paved one but overall I am very glad with my choice of school. They have weekday and weekend classes. A new class starts every week, which I liked because you spend time with the other students that started before you and you can learn from them. I attended the weekday classes. We sign in at 7:30 and go until 6pm Mon-Thurs. Fridays are half days, we get out at 12:30. Each morning we are sorted into small groups, with the most senior students leading each group. The newer students listen to the senior students do pre-trip inspections (PTI's) every day. By your fourth week you are ready to lead a group and do the inspection yourself, with the newest students listening to you. If you pay attention, and ask questions and study your pre-trip guide that you are given, you will learn the PTI like the back of your hand. After the PTI, first week students go to class to learn Logbooks, Hours of Service, HazMat, Trip Planning, etc... 2nd week students ideally should be in the yard learning backing maneuvers and practicing shifting on the shifting track. Third week students are usually doing a mix of observation in the trucks (watching 4th week students doing their BTW training), and more practice in the yard. 4th week students are doing their BTW and testing at the end of the week. Lunch break is from 12-1pm, and then back for more class, yard, BTW, whatever. Sometimes company recruiters come in to give presentations, usually in the late afternoon. They try to schedule them from 5:30-6 so as not to interrupt the learning periods. This school is really big on Werner Enterprises, but they don't pressure anyone to go there. We had recruiters from US Express, Werner, Roehl, TMC, and a few others. The school was just given an award from Roehl for the quality of training that their new hires received at Future Truckers. Some advice: You never know who your fellow students might be. You really wonder why some are there in the first place. Use common sense and avoid the "suspect" ones, and learn from the dedicated ones. Don't go out drinking or partying with other students. Don't stay up late. Study, study, study! Don't run over Kelly's cones in the lot, and make Greg take you to Jugtown Cafe! Good luck!

Comments: Career Change brought me to IITR. Learned alot of information in a hurry, no game playing here, just great & knowledgeable teachers that want to see their students succeed. Not everyone passed the tests, doing the job is harder than the book work. Some had trouble with backing .... the instructors gave their all and their best to teach newbies how to operate the BigRigs. I would never try any other training school. IITR is the BEST. IITR is a great first step into the world of being a professional truck driver. Thanks to IITR I am moving up and moving on ..... Thanks BUD and KEN (instructors), Thanks IITR !!!

Comments: I attended this school after visiting 3 others. It has by far the nicest trucks I've seen at any school. The instructors were very professional and the owner was a hands on honest guy. Job placement was excellent. I highly reccomend this school to anyone interested in trucking.

Comments: After choosing from many schools over a coarse of 4 years I decided to attend this one, and am glad I did. The whole staff of the Nights of the Road seems to have 1 thing in common and thats to train you to be one of the best drivers out there. All the instructors have been truck drivers themselfs. Note to all future students, listen to what they have to say. All information they tell you is from learing it themselfs out on the road. Besides driving on country roads and city streets both day and night experiences, the manuvers in the yard are what your going to need when you back up to the docks of the shippers. From what I have seen at the school they go the extra mile to make you one one of the best drivers out there. I got a job with a major trucking company right out of school and everything I was tought in school is used everyday in the real trucking world. Good Luck to you on your choices. Comments: I read one of the other comments about LCC truck driving school and I totaly disagree on that persons view. The instructers have the patients of a saint for what they have to go through trying to teach someone how to drive one of those big rigs. And if there is people talking while they are trying to teach, then they might get your attention. Yes, it might mean yelling but when students pay over $3000.00 for this class they want to learn. Yes they may yell sometimes but it is because the person did not pay attention. They don't tell you to do something without a reason. They are trying to teach you the skills and safety aspect necessary to drive a truck and they are damn good at it. I just finished a 5 week course there and I have nothing but GOOD to say about it. The instructors are great and really know their stuff. Oh and about the grades, one can get better than a C. All they have to do is pay attention and do their home work. Is the class easy? NO. Is this class for everyone? NO. But if you really want to be a driver then you will do what it takes to pass the class. So if you get yelled at, all they are trying to do is teach you the right way to safely drive a truck. Personally I think that every person in the country should take this course because it would make it a much safer place to drive. We would have much more respect for each other on the road today. Not to toot my own horn but I received an A. as well as over half of the students in our class did also. I have heard it said that LCC Truck Driving School in Augusta, MI is rated one of the top in the country. Class #444

Comments: WARNING – this school is unable to teach you to drive successfully. Their reputation and philosophy is, “if you can take the instructor screaming at you in the truck, then you can handle the stress of being a truck driver.” They spend less than a third of their time with you. They get you partnered up and you spend the time with the partner and the truck. Little positive feedback is offered on how to handle the truck. When the instructors are in the truck with you, they’re trying to shake you out. Basically, they have less than a 50% pass rate. I passed the program, only after my instructor told me not to become a trucker because I didn’t “feel safe” with the instructor screaming at me. I found the entire 5 week experience poor and it left not wanting to drive a truck, but $2,300 lighter in the wallet. (Also, if it matters, they give you 9 credit hours at LCC, but they only give you C’s; so, you’re GPA will be permanently affected.)

After I obtained my CDL A license, it took me only a couple of days to land a job with a large national trucking company, which already had hired a few of the new drivers who graduated from your school. Comments: I just finished the CDL A Driver's Training through NTI in Bangor, ME and successfully completed the state test. The training experience was an enjoyable learning experience and obviously, I learned a lot. When it came time to take the State Test, the instructor was at the testing site the entire time, instilling confidence, in a calming and reassuring manner, saying he knew we could do it. He ran through the course, where the problems could be and what to do. The instructor was constantly relaying his knowledge and experience, helping the students and dealing with each at their level. His approach was very hands on and I liked that. I will be relaying my experiences to friends, collogues and others looking toward a CDL A.

Comments: This school is a rip! The comment about the recruiter saying whatever to get you to sign up is true! For example, there were people in the classes who had 2 DUI's and one guy had one in the last year! What respectable carrier is going to hire someone like that?! That didn't stop Roadmaster from taking his money and telling him that he was "good to go!". Also, they will tell you that they offer refresher training but when the class is over NOPE! They don't have time for that! You will hear a lot of contradictions once you are done with the course (they are done with YOU) and it is too late to get your money back. And as far as the INSTRUCTORS go, there were some good ones, but there was a HORRIBLE one who thrived on DANGER and EXCITEMENT while the students were driving. This school cost $2000 more than other PTDI courses, and you STILL have to pay for your own license, medical, and drug test. There are MANY other schools in the Central Ohio area that you can go to that are not only cheaper, but just plain better. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY OR YOUR TIME ON ROADMASTER IN COLUMBUS, OHIO! Comments: This is a very good school. Classroom subject matter is tailored to support the range activities you work on each day. There is a logical progression through the four week program with your CDL test coming the middle of week four -- you are thoroughly prepared for the skills test. In the process, you will get 400 - 600 miles on country roads and (small) city streets. After the four week classroom/range course, you are offered employment and if you accept, you go on the road for 20 days with a Roehl driver/trainer, followed by another 20 days with another rookie driver (as a team). For a four week course, I don't see how it could be better organized.

Comments: I attended Roehl's driver training school in Jan/Feb of 2008. I was extremely happy with the program (except it was really cold at the time). It was a very professional operation with almost as much class time as driving time. The instructors were kind and considerate. They treated you like a person instead of a piece of crap like some other schools. Roehl lives by the motto, Driven To Protect Others. They are all about safety. Classes are 10 hours a day, six days a week. They push you hard, but it's worth it and it's manageable. The school itself is clean with modern classrooms and lunchroom. They also provide free coffee which some schools do not. It might not sound like much...but when you arrive at 7am, the hot (and good tasting) coffee counts for a lot. Sleeping quarters are all offsite. There are several different places at which one might end up. Mine was at an apartment type complex. It was a studio apartment which was clean and had a small kitchen. It was very satisfactory. All in all, I had a great experience at Roehl. The program is intelligently designed and run. The people were great. The living quarters were fine. Roehl is definitely not a CDL Mill. I would recommend Roehl to anyone.

Comments: Anyone thinking about going to this school without any prior experience please reconsider. This company is a rip-off and has no desire to hire you after training. The training is inadequate and will hurt you in the long run. They also practice discrimination against people of color. In my case I went through Phase I and then Phase II. Phase III consisted of 2 days of highway driving for three weeks (train for two days then go home until next week, then take a city road test that they know you will fail in order to give them an excuse to terminate your employment.) They charge $4000 plus 27% interest. They will not provide you with a CDL and will blackball you as an unsafe driver and will not allow you to attend another driving school until you have repaid theirs first. If anyone else has a similar story to mine please contact U.S. Attorney in order to file a class action suit.

Comments: This program is definitely NOT one of the CDL mills you describe in your excellent article. This program emphasizes sound principles and, despite its brevity, emphasizes many of the same sound fundamentals found on this website. Despite a smattering of editing errors, I can't remember a better workbook/textbook. There is lots of logging practice, including a mock log students maintain throughout the 11 day training, some homework exercises, an interim "check for learning" and coverage on the final exam. Also included are exercises to teach one how to keep track of available "70 hour rule" hours. They even give you a handy plastic ruler with 8 days blocked off and a stencil for drawing "flags." Additionally, there is lots of practice with trip planning, including extensive map reading, estimation of hours, factoring in DOT breaks, etc. Most important: no one is going to send you like a lamb to the slaughter out on the open road. Quite the contrary, everyone is very strict about making sure you learn the specifics of driving a truck and will not hesitate to point out where and how you need to improve. Anyone brand new to truck driving should start now to practice keeping their eyes moving, paying attention to what's on the horizon, and not just staring out the front windshield as though watching TV. Babysitting one's big fat ass so it doesn't do a samba from hell and take out a stop sign on a right turn takes some practice. Also, prior manual transmission experience is a plus. If anyone tells you different, it's just their effort to "accentuate the positive" with the vast majority of automatic transmission warriors. Learning to clutch twice instead of once is a simple adjustment. Remember how difficult it was getting used to a clutch and a friction point? That's what these A/T warriors face now. I wouldn't trade places with them for all the tea in China. Recommendations? If you're not sure whether you want to enter this field, then don't. Otherwise, as you evaluate your choices, the 11 day Schneider program might be short, but by no means is it skimpy or negligent. And it's only the beginning of a training/monitoring program that will last throughout your entire tenure with the company.

Comments: Smith and Solomin was recently purchased by Bordentown Truck Driving School, which is in turn owened by the same people who own the Petro Truckstop in Bordentown, NJ. The school readily admits that there job is limited to get you ready to pass your CDL A or B drivers test conducted by the State of NJ; and there school will not turn you into a fully experienced truck driver. Towards this goal, they guaranty that you can continue to come to the school as long as it takes until you have obtained your CDL license. The cost varies depending on which CDL license you want, what discount you can get from them. (People in my class spent from $2900 to $4,000 for the CDL A school.) Additionally you can save about $750 by skipping the first week of the school that is devoted to classroom study used to prepare you to pass the NJ state tests needed to obtain your driving permit. (Study and pass the tests on your own as some of the student do.) On your own time they will provide you with practice tests and videos to assist you in obtaining all other endorsements (tanker, double and triples, Hazmat, bus, etc.) you may want to obtain. Admittedly things are not perfect at this school but in talking to other students this is probably the best school in the state. County unemployment offices send many people as well as Verison and PSE&G send their employees there to obtain a CDL A license for work. You will need additional training from your employer upon being hired by them. I believe that there is only one other school in NJ that is PTDI certified. This is important because a good percentage of trucking companies will only take on student grad's from PTDI certified schools. How long the school lasts before you go for your state road test depends on how quick you pick up the skills you need to be able to pass the (3)tests. In

Comments: I'd like to take the time to thank S.M.T.D.S. for the training they have provided me. My hat's off to all of them, ( Terry, Chester, Regina, Marty, Dave). I was one of four ( yes, that's right, only four) students at the particular time I took the class. This enabled the other students and I to really get all the hands-on experience, (sometimes more than we really wanted ;-) ) and instructor time we need to get started as a new truck driver and survive out there. They don't just sign you off on a task or manuver unless you perform it and perform it correctly. After reading the article on CD-Mills I was very glad I chose to attend S.M.T.D.S. These guys, ( and gals , sorry Regina :-) ) don't treat you like just another number or check they can cash. They are concerned with turning you into a safe, courteous professional driver. They give you a 100% in everything they teach you and with getting you started in the industry. They take pride in what they are doing and it shows. Keep up the great work!!

Comments: I noticed that persons needing more help seemed to have a lower student to instructor #. When I went to Stevens school the ratio was 3.3 students to 1 instructor. You have to have your TX class A permit before attending, or you will have to get it while in school within the first 3 to 5 days of class on your own time. This is because this class spends more time behind the wheel then most 3 week classes. Getting your permit is not hard if you have half a brain and being in the truck sure beats the classroom. After this class I felt fully ready for my 5 weeks with a OTR trainer.

Comments: I attended in 2000 and in a class of about 20, there were 3 instructors for almost a 7:1 ratio. Most of the time when city driving, there were about 5 students per truck. The training was basically good, but when you go out with a driver trainer you sure don't know what you will get. The owner - operator driver trainer I got was not much of a trainer and he cost me ticket (company paid it - not my fault, but on my MVR) and later ran into a pack of them o/o's that did near reckless speeding (I got someone elses ticket - later succcessfully beat it in court)and needless to say, I didn't finish their training, they let me go for a so called "safety violation". Then they tried to have a collection agency that I think is a subsidiary company come after me for $5000 tuition. Gee Thanks! I would check these guys out before committing to them...they have pretty trucks and talk a good game, but stay away from their owner / operator driver trainers...they get paid for their miles and yours and will have you run the crap hours and not let you drive anything that would risk their investment. Get a company driver as a trainer if you want to learn anything after the 3 week CDL portion. They also want you to stay 2 years as a payback...way too long in my book. Read the fine print before you sign anything at their school so you know what you are getting in for.

If you are doing drugs don't go until you are clean, 20 + people left just on drug test. Have all your information togeather, 20 more had to leave just to get their stuff. Was told that on the local news there was a story that reported the school closed due to the underwriter of their student loan program pulling out due to a high default rate. Supposidely students were stranded at the local bus station in Lexington to get home on their own, some just a few days from graduation!!!

Comments: tri state has a 90% failure rate for cdl testing.most instructors are rejects from other schools .they have scam going with test site.keep sending for $85 a pop ,send you back over&over.equipment is junk,best place is junk yard. instructors are liars,they will set you up for failure& they all stick together.11 hour days including weekends,what more can i say??? 90& failure rate.try anyother school in area for your own good,believe me ,i know!!! voice of experience!!!!!!!

Comments: OK school with good instructors. My only problem here is job placement, it is nearly non-existing, being done by a pregnant woman who seems to always be at the doctors. But other than that they have many ways to teach you what they know. I FULLY recommend!!!

Comments: I did a lot of research and found that Tri State doesn't run any scams. They have an excellent reputation, which I found out from different truck drivers and various companies. I was very fortunate to have chosen Tri State. They are the only school I investigated that discusses your job opportunities before you start training. I am very happily employed now, but I know that if I need their services in the future they will still be there and will help me. Way to go Tri State!

Comments: Come on...it is obvious that the "Bravo" comment was written by someone at the school. Leaders in the industry? They don't even get most of their students from the local area (these people know the reputation and go elsewhere). I won't say anything negative but I suggest that you check out other schools in the area. They are (1) Napier (2) Clark State CC (3) Southern States CC (4) Roadmaster. Sure some of them might be a decent drive, but you will get better training. How many instructors per student do the schools have? How many hours "BEHIND" the wheel do you get? How many companies recruit the schools graduates. Example: Roadmaster in Columbus has over 30 companies making a pitch for you to work with them. Tristate has maybe 5!!! Why don't trucking companies want to hire their graduates? DO THE RESEARCH ON YOUR OWN....BE SURE BEFORE YOU SIGN
